District 9, a new take on the alien movie theme
I wasn't really sure what to expect with Peter Jackson's new alien movie, District 9. Many movies and TV series have been made within this subject, so what will make this one stand out? I don't want to spoil too much for those who might want to see it, so I will proceed with utmost caution.
The movie starts out as a commentary, almost like a show you might see on Discovery or the History channels. Peter uses this to setup the plot; the who, what, when, and where. While this does take a nearly 45 minutes to an hour to take place, it does so very seamlessly and jumps from the documentary to real time before you even realize it took place. Throughout the rest of the movie you are in real time with the occasional small snippet thrown in, but it closes back into the documentary feel.
There are a few social issues that are continuous undercurrents throughout the movie, such as racism and corporate governmental control . And while this can sometimes ruin a good movie if it is too heavy, it takes place subtlety and really helps out the movie's story. Overall, I would have to give it a thumb up. Was it the best alien movie I have ever seen? Well not sure if I would say that, but it was a refreshing take on aliens versus humans.
